jay barrs

assistant head coach

Jay has been shooting archery since age 5 and has amassed an impressive list of accomplishments:

1988 Olympic Gold Medalist

1988 Olympic Silver Medalist Men’s Team

1992 Olympic Team member

1990 and 1992 World Field Champion

2001 World Games Gold Medalist

He has won 21 National Championships:  4 National Indoor Championships, 3 National Target Championships and 14 National Filed Championships. Over the last 35 years he has given over 100 seminars in the US and internationally.  In 2010 he turned his attention to coaching and currently coaches US and international archers. Jay’s approach to tournaments was always unique.  While most competitors were trying to calm down and be zen-like, Jay blasted heavy medal music in his walkman between ends.  During the finals of the 1988 Olympics he could be seen rocking out to Motley Crew and Sammy Hagar, playing his air-guitar and having fun.  It was so unusual that after winning the Gold Medal the media dubbed him the “Heavy Medalist.”
